Romans key to success was based mostly on it's geography. Rome was built on a low ground rather than a high ground with the lowest part of the city containing the Pantheon and the highest point of the city was the Monte Mario Hill. Rome was created close to the Tiber River and had 7 hills surrounding it. One of the hills was called Aventine, Capitoline, Quirinal, Viminal, Caelian, Palatine, and the Esquiline. These hills though were seperated by marshy land and the Tiber river. Because of these hills Rome was also often called "the city of seven hills". Of the seven hills the Caelian, Esquiline, Quirinal and Viminal hills were portions of a volcanic ridge. The biggest of all the seven is the Esquiline hill, it is famous because the Roman emperor constructed the domus aurea on it. Before the time of the Roman Empire the eastern side of the Esquiline hill was mainly were the poor buried their dead. Also Execution of criminals was held by the Esquiline gate and the bodies were left to rot there. In addition on the Esquiline were The Temple of Claudius, The Colossus, and the Baths of Trajan. Also the Palatine was famous because in the ledger of Romulus and Remus the building of the civilization was constructed there.
The Tiber River is the most important river in central Italy. The Tiber River was originally called Albulula because it was so white, but it was renamed Tiberis after Tiberinus, who was a king of Alba Longa who drowned in the river. The river flows from the Apennine Mountains south-westwards to the Tyrrhenian Sea while passing Rome. This river is 405 km long and is one of the main aspects that has shaped Rome with it's history and culture. Since the Roman couldn't travel by land the Tiber River was like a watery highway. It helped ship goods from Rome to other places all around the Mediterranean. Though the Tiber River way helpful with trading goods and spreading culture the river also flooded creating an obstacle for the Romans to face. The Romans contained the Tiber River in large stone embarckments. The building of these high embankments started in 1876.
